JULY AND AUGUST MAMMOGRAM CLINICS OVER THE TOP
Desert Women for Equality
On July 16th a double clinic (2 mammogram machines) was held at the Shenandoah Springs Art Center and 65 women were screened, many of them receiving their “first” and long overdue mammogram. Of that group 10% required further testing and have been referred to clinics for the services required. This was the first Desert Healthcare District funded clinic made possible by a $40,000 grant awarded to DWE for the District 103 cities of the DHCD area.
Three first time volunteers assisted the staff in that very busy clinic and along with RSVP and a representative of Susan B. Koman on hand, educational materials for services as well as water were available for the women coming to be screened.
This clinic was followed by another large screening August 13th at the Eleanor Shadowden Senior Center in Coachella and 59 more women left having been screened and receiving more educational materials.
The Coachella clinic was sponsored by The City of Coachella as the second clinic funded by a grant for community development in 2008. From the two Coachella clinics this year 120 women received a free mammogram paid for by the city.
The “We care” program which began June 2006 has to date given over 700 Mammograms and we are expecting to be over 900 by year end 2008.
Upcoming clinics remaining for 2008 are:
- Palm Springs (Desert Aids Project Women’s Health Fair)
September 27, 2008 9:00 am-2:00 pm
- Palm Springs (Mizell Senior Center)
October 29, 2008 9:00 am-4:00 pm
- Cathedral City (Golden Rainbow Senior Center)
November 11, 2008 9:00 am-4:00 pm.
APPOINTMENTS ARE RECOMMENDED TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT AT THE FINAL 2 CLINICS. CALL 325-4701 TO SCHEDULE. THE HEALTH FAIR WILL ACCEPT WAK-IN APPOINTMENTS UNTIL 1:30 ON THE DAY OF THE FAIR.
Mammograms Continue To Grow
Three clinics in 2008 have given 144 women the opportunity to receive a free mammogram with 5 more clinics scheduled by year end 2008. Of the 144 mammograms given, 11 women were identified as requiring further testing and were referred successfully to available care sites.
The total number of mammograms given since the founding and opening of the first clinic in June 2006 is 566 with more then 85 women being referred for further care.
This year we held two clinics in Desert Hot Springs and one in Coachella with upcoming clinics scheduled for Indio, Palm Springs, 1000 Palms, and Coachella.
An exciting part of the program this year is seeing women, who had a mammogram a year or longer ago, who are returning for an annual mammogram. With the development of a non-specific reminder postcard ,women are calling to schedule a followup mammogram and are taking "selfcare" seriously.
Recently at one of our clinics, we had three generations of women coming in for mammograms and all of them had never had a mammogram before that day.
We continue to need help at our clinics and invite anyone who would like to be trained and attend clinics to contact Vivian at 760-360-7691.

SO. CA EDISON COMES THROUGH FOR WOMEN
Southern California has again donated $500 to the “We Care” free mammography program as a restatement of their ongoing support in assisting the Desert Women for Equality’s program serving the uninsured and underinsured women and our LGTB driven organization. The funds will be used to assist in funding an upcoming free clinic which usually serves 50-70 women.
Lin Juniper, So CA Edison notified our president today that they are again endorsing this program and the outcomes of the services offered to the women who are so desperately in need of care. President Barbara Barrett stated “the fabulous thing about Lin and So CA Edison is that we aren’t pursuing them, they just see, listen and care and want to help-what a group”.
Our “thanks” to this terrific corporation.
CITY OF PALM SPRINGS DONATES TO FREE MAMMOGRAMS
The City of Palm Springs has made a second donation of $500 to the “We Care” free mobile mammography program in 2008 showing their ongoing support to Desert Women for Equality and the hard work of this organization, which has now completed over 700 free mammograms for women of the Coachella Valley.
The funds will be used to help pay for an upcoming clinic and insure that the women of Palm Springs continue to have the offering available to them throughout the year. DWE wishes to thank Mayor Steve Pougnet and the City Council in recognizing the value of this program and for caring for the women within the city who otherwise would not receive a mammogram.
Desert Healthcare District awards $40,000 for mobile mammography

Desert Healthcare District has awarded a $40,000 grant to Desert Women for Equality to support its "We Care" free mobile mammography program. DHCD's grant provides necessary funding for the "We Care" program that conducts free mammograms to uninsured and underinsured women in the Desert Healthcare District service area.
The grant will pay for individual mammograms that are conducted at scheduled clinics within the District. Desert Women for Equality hires a Laguna Beach mobile mammography group that brings mammography equipment to various pre-determined sites in the Coachella Valley. Women are screened on an appointment and walk-in basis. Clients who require follow-up care are referred to free medical clinics and treatment centers for further evaluation. Each clinic averages 55 to 65 mammograms per clinic. Since June 2006 Desert Women for Equality has paid for over 565 freemammograms. This year eight clinics are scheduled in the Desert Healthcare District service area.
The "We Care" program is in direct alignment with the District's strategic objectives - target access to breast-cancer screening; improve access to primary health care underserved communities; and facilitation of access to health education, disease prevention and comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services.
About Desert Healthcare District

The Jean O'Leary Scholarship for Women
Jean O’Leary, for whom the scholarship is named, was a leader in the fight for human rights for lesbians and women. She believed in being true to herself and letting the world know it; and consequently founded the “National Coming Out Day”, for gays and lesbians. Jean O’Leary passed away in 2005, a victim of lung cancer, and has been remembered as a link of human kindness helping the women’s movement recognize the universal cost of homophobia. This scholarship is given in the spirit of perpetuating equality, and being open about who you really are, Jean O’Leary strived for this throughout her life.
Desert Women for Equality is a non profit organization that believes that all women should have the right to achieve their dreams through education. Because of our strong beliefs and determination that women should receive equal opportunities in education and the work place we established this scholarship in Jean O’Leary’s name in 2006-2007. This is an on going scholarship and continued in 2007-2008. This year because our organization has grown in recognition and by the generosity of our supporters, we are able to offer four $1,000.00 scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year. The deadline for applications is July 15th, 2008. We are opening the scholarship to ALL women seeking an education that are residents of Coachella Valley.
