REGIONAL ACCESS PROJECT

DWE has been honored to have Regional Access Project as a partner for the last two years and now they have made us even happier by granting us $25,000 (that’s $15,000 more than they gave us in 2010 and 2011) to help us with our East Valley clinics.
These monies will go entirely for direct services and all of it will be used for the Flying Doctors medical clinics in Thermal, CA as well as for our Palm Desert, Indio and Coachella clinics.
RAP also provides us with free printing and technical support. We will be meeting with a consultant to discuss sustainability of our program—that’s “grant speak” for how we intend to continue to get financial support in the coming years. This educational support is vital to our continuity and our mission to help all women in our valley have access to preventive mammogram screenings.
Thank you Board of Directors of RAP and staff for your continued belief is what we do!

HELEN RODRIQUEZ-TRIAS AWARD

The Helen Rodriguez-Trias award was established by the California Department of Health Services’ Offices of Women’s Health in 2002 to honor the memory of Dr. Helen Rodriguez-Trias, a founding member of the office’s Women’s Health Council. Dr. Rodriguez-Trias left a substantial legacy of grassroots activism and leadership in women’s health. The award is presented in May of each year as part of Women’s Health Month celebrations. The award will recognize an organization or individual who has demonstrated leadership in promoting women’s health services at the community level.
Talk about a glove fitting — DWE and our We Care Free Mammogram Program has been nominated for this prestigious award and because we are so unique and, in my opinion, the epitome of “grassroots activism and leadership in women’s health”, the honor may be bestowed upon all of us. I’ll keep you posted.

2012 PRIDE PARADE NOMINATIONS

As past Volunteers of the Year (2010), Sharon Doty and I were asked for suggestions for groups in our Valley who qualified as Organization of the Year and guess who we picked?
There are so many qualified organizations but again none as unique as we are. From the first LGBT Board of Directors to the first Desert Pride Center June 2006 clinic, to the donations from Front Runners, PSLOD, Lalapoolooza, the Gay Rodeo, Rainbow Women, Marnie Hesson of L-Spot, etc., etc., to the every-loyal gay and lesbian volunteers and supporters we ensure that all women in our Valley have a chance to beat the odds of early death from undetected breast cancer.
Even if we are not selected as the recipient of an award, we know that we are an award-winning group of very special people making this happen.

CITY COUNCIL PROGRAM

We will be sending Board members to City Council meetings across our Valley to help educate all of our council members about our program. We’re hoping this will help us reach more women who need our services and, of course, get more donations to pay for their mammogram screenings. Most council meetings are televised so look for us on your TV screens starting in May 2012.

BOSOM BUDDIES

Don’t forget to think about being a Bosom Buddy. Go to Supporters Tab on our website, www.desertwomenforequality.com and buy a mammogram or part of one.

Until next time, Barbara
